A rustic palm straw basket immediately conjures up images of comfort and ease—mornings spent perusing the farmers’ market, warm afternoons at the beach, braided sides filled to the brim with fresh flowers and feathery carrot tops or stashed full of books and magazines beside a favorite easy chair. A common sight amongst shoppers in the markets of France and Italy, these smart, simple carryalls retain a brand of easy charm all their own.
Hand woven by women artisans in Marrakech from the fronds of abundant palm trees, these baskets are often connected and placed on the backs of donkeys to transport rubble, soil, and construction materials—a testament to their strength and durability. Imported by a French company devoted to promoting fair trade and preserving traditional rural handicrafts, these baskets are a true example of style meeting substance.
USE & CARE
These totes make the ideal multipurpose carryalls. Strong, flexible, and naturally water-resistant, they can be used to transport everything from beach supplies to groceries and firewood, to store books, tools, or crafting supplies, or simply carried as an attractive everyday tote.
PRODUCTION & DESIGN
Since its inception in 2006 by Frenchwoman Martine Renault, the importer of these baskets has focused its product range on useful objects made with natural materials and respect for the environment, while preserving traditional customs and improving the living conditions and economic situations of artisans. These items are not only aesthetically pleasing, but above all they are useful and practical objects meant to become an integral part of your everyday life.
These baskets are made by a group of women weavers in Marrakech, Morocco, using traditional handcrafting techniques passed down from generations of artisans.
