Minerva Teichert, Jesus at the Home of Mary and Martha Framed

store.moa.byu.edu

The works of western American artist, Minerva Teichert, have received increasingly popular and critical acclaim in recent years. From her modest home in Wyoming, Teichert produced a prolific number of paintings that celebrate the saga of western settlement and the heritage of her Mormon faith. Today, Teichert is beloved among the LDS community as a woman who successfully combined faith and family and left an extraordinary legacy of artistic production. In this representation of the well-known Biblical story, Teichert invites the viewer into this intimate domestic scene. Christ teaches Mary while a distracted Martha stands busily by, too proud to see the more important events and opportunities around her. Having painted this piece shortly after her conversion, Teichert could perhaps be trying to teach the same lesson with her art that which Christ once did to the sisters of Lazarus.
