Hidden Message Jewelry For Those Who Can Keep A Secret

Hidden Message Jewelry For Those Who Can Keep A Secret

There’s something so illicit about wearing jewelry with a secret message written on the inside. The entire world can see that you’re wearing it, but only you (and maybe a lucky paramour) know what it says beneath. The hidden inscription might be a phrase whose special meaning is known only to you, a flirty love note, a favorite quotation, or even something a little more risqué.

Some clandestine favorites:

  1. Lockets are a natural place to store secrets. Here’s one that says “Let’s run away to Paris.” (Okay!) Another opens up to read, simply, “Be mine.”

  2. Simple metal bracelets and rings might look demure from the outside, but only you know the message pressed against your skin. This ring reads “Carpe Diem” on the inside—buy it for yourself if you’re going through a slump. Etsy is full of simple silver bracelets that can be customized to read whatever you want (might I suggest “I woke up like this”?). And then there’s always the R-rated options, like this bracelet that reads, “Flog me.”

  3. Jewelry decorated in Morse code? A genius way to tell the world exactly what you mean in a language they don’t understand. I’m obsessed with the Etsy shop FairQuarry, which sells necklaces and bracelets in sassy Morse code from “Evil Genuis” and “Poet” to “Cocaine” and “Bad Motherf*cker.” For the classier ladies, these bracelets that spell out “Sister” in Morse would be perfect for baby sister’s graduation day—or a high school reunion. (Wait, are we still friends with those people?)

  4. For those who like their secrets in to be objects, not notes, a vintage “poison ring” does the trick. These elaborate rings flip up to reveal a secret compartment, perfect for storing arsenic or anything else you want to hide from the authorities.

  5. What about messages on tiny scraps of paper that can be tucked anywhere? This necklace pendant is actually a miniature terrarium with a scrap of Neruda inside: “I love you as certain dark things/are to be loved. In secret,/Between the Shadow and the Soul.” (Bam.) And here’s a locket that comes with a tiny sheet of parchment paper, for inscribing your innermost thoughts before sealing them away.

  6. Some symbols are very cryptic, too. If you’re not afraid to brave the wrath of secret societies the world over, try a dangly pair of earrings emblazoned with the symbol of the Illuminati. Or what about a vintage Masonic ring? You’ve got the jewelry—getting in the door is up to you.
