A husband and wife team, tucked in a workshop in the hills of the Saitama region of Japan, oversee every step of the process of crafting these bags. Previously, the pair crafted equestrian products for the racehorse industry—an industry where sturdiness and finish are essential to an acceptable product. Branching out on their own, they wanted to use the same sturdy materials combined with objects of everyday use. Bags were a natural choice.
This tote's sturdy canvas, reinforced with smooth, vegetable tanned cow hide leather, gives the bag a retained shape, making it easy to fill with books, trinkets from the market or picnic gear, and set down conveniently at your side without it toppling over. The straps, which have been hand painted along the sides, are attached to the interior slash and patch pockets with solid brass rivets.
The bag is a representation of Japanese design, at once whimsical, indefinably distinct, and refined to a degree almost unthinkable elsewhere.
