In 1723, a cooperative mill was started in County Wicklow, Ireland, where farmers could spin and weave their wool into tweeds and blankets. All the yarn was uncolored at first, but then the farmers started experimenting with natural vegetable dyes, and soon the mill’s output was livened with reds, greens and yellows.
